Ruf [Rudolf] GRÜNIG was married about 1574 at Thurnen [now Mühlethurnen],
Canton  Bern, Switzerland.  His wife was Elsbeth KERNEN, and they were the parents
of children baptized at Thurnen.  Some people have incorrectly listed Ruf as
having been baptized 12 Jan. 1550, the son of Peter GRÜNIG.  While Peter did
have a child baptized that day, the child was also named Peter, nor Ruf.

Christen GRÜNIG who married Barbli NUSSBAUM was incorrectly indentified
by Julius Billeter as the Christian baptized 23 June 1644, son of Ruff GRÜNIG and
wife Anna KUNCKLER.  He also identified the Christen, son of Ruff GRÜNIG and 
Barbli MESSERLI as having married first Anna ALTHAUS and second Elsbeth
KOHLER.7 At the baptisms of the children of the latter Christen he was listed as living
at Holenwägan [Hohlenwegen].8

That the father of the Christen who married Barbli NUSSBAUM is named Ruff is
certain.  On 12 October 1679 Hans SCHWEIZER and wife Barbli SCHERLER
had as one the sponsors for the baptism of their daughter Stini, "Babi NUSSBAUM,
Ruf GRÜNIG's son's wife at Durishaus."9

The church records show that there were two men named Ruf GRÜNIG with sons
named Christen.  The children of one Ruf were listed as children of "Ruf of Durishaus"
and the other of children of "Ruf of Holenwägen."  That the Ruf that married Barbli
MESSERLI lived at Dörishaus, and the Ruf that married Anna KUNKLER lived at
Holenwägen is shown from the marriage of Christina GRÜNIG in 1674 to Melcher
TRACHSEL. She was listed as of "Turishaus"6 and in other records she was listed as
the daughter of Ruf, location not identified. The Ruf that married Anna KUNKLER
had no daughter named Christina [Stini], while the Ruf that married Barbara MESSERLI
did. Therfore, the Ruf that lived at Dörishaus had married Barbli MESSERLI, and the
Ruf that lived at Holenwegen had married Anna KUNKLER.  Both Dörishaus and
Hohlenwegen are localities identified with Burgistein.

Christen GRÜNIG and Barbli NUSSBAUM were the parents of seven children.  For
the baptisms of Anna, Rudolff and Christina they were listed as residents of Dörishaus,
a small locality within the Gemeinde of Burgistein, which was part of the church parish
of Thurnen (now) Mühlethurnen. For the other baptisms, their residence was not given.
