This article is to explore the likely relation of two SHORT families that until
they had a DNA match to each other, they were unknown to be related. Those two
lines are:
Aaron SHORT who died about 1779 in Guilford Co., NC
John SHORT born 1756 in Shenandoah (then Frederick Co.) VA; died 1836 Lawrence Co., Ind.

On the page:
SHORT DNA PROJECT: RESULTS
these are:
Aaron SHORT is number S-17, S-20, S-21, S-38, S-42, S-47, S-49, and S-72
John SHORT is S-19, S-22, S-51 and S-58.

John SHORT had a Revolutionary War pension application, in which he stated he
was born in Dunmore, now Shenandoah Co.,VA on 15 Feb. 1756. At the time he was
born, this was still Frederick County.

From his deposition of times that he resided in different localities, he lived
in the following locations:
at enlistment Rockingham Co., VA
c. 1781-c. 1783 Rockingham Co., VA
c. 1783-c. 1790 Russell Co., VA [Note: Russell formed in 1785 from Washington]
c. 1790-c. 1792 Pendleton Dist., SC [Note: appears in 1790 census there]
c. 1792-c. 1802 Russell Co., VA
c. 1802-c. 1817 Pulaski Co., KY
c. 1817-1832 Lawrence Co., Ind.

Most descendants of John when asked, state John SHORT was the son of a Thomas
SHORT and wife Nancy, their source being the book Pauline Williams Wright,
A Short Line Across America: Descendants of John and Mary Hansford Short,
(Arkadelphia, AR: P.W. Wright, 1984). The earliest mention found of John
being a "son" of Thomas SHORT is a query which appeared in the Virginia
Magazine of History and Biography 35 (1927): 294. This query stated
that John was born in the "Tigard Valley," the son of Thomas SHORT, and that
the SHORT ancestry was said to be from Scotland.

IF this is the original "source" then some modern genealogists have taken "Scotch
ancestry" and changed it to "born in Scotland," and even added exact dates.
The most common listing for those that list Thomas as born in Scotland is that
he was born 30 Jan. 1731 at Orphir, Orkney, Scotland. The Orphir records have
been abstracted from the IGI, and while there was a Thomas born on that date,
he would appear to have married there to Jennet HAY, as they had a child born
there in 1759. Note also that the "Tigard Valley" is not part of Shenandoah County
where John stated in his pension application that he was born.

No records of a Thomas SHORT in Frederick County or elsewhere in the 1750s has been
found. There is no doubt that Thomas was closely associated with the family of Samuel
SHORT there. This Samuel died in 1764, leaving a son Samuel that was of age by 1770,
meaning the younger Samuel was born no later than about 1749.

A published abstract [Peggy Shomo Joyner, Abstracts of Virginia's Northern Neck
Warrants & Surveys, Frederick County 1747-1780, Volume II, (Portsmouth, VA: Joyner, 1985),
91] stated that:
"John BREEDING & Zachariah PRICE made oath that Saml SHORT was the only heir
of Saml SHORT, decd.

The original record actually states:
"This day Came John BREEDING Ann BREEDING &
Zachariah PRICE before me and made Oath that
The present Saml SHORT an Inhabitant of this County
is the only T[r]ue & Lawfull Heir of Saml SHORT
Decd.
	Given under my hand
	this 13th of August 1770
	M. HARRISON"

Sir Its my Desire that their may a Deed Issue for
the land Surveyed for the Benefitt of My Husband
Saml SHORT ^Decd^ in the Name of My Son Saml SHORT
he being the proper Heir of the Above Saml SHORT Decd
as Witness my hand & Seale this 23th of Augt 1770
Test her
   M. HARRISON Ann X BREDING
         		    mark"

Due to primogeniture which was in effect in Virginia at that time, the "only
lawful heir" is different from "only heir." Under primogeniture, the
eldest son inherited all the land. Under primogeniture, the eldest son
was the "only lawful heir." Notice that in what appears to be a dictation
by Ann BREEDING, that she stated her son Samuel SHORT was the "proper heir,"
meaning he was the oldest son of the elder Samuel.

It will also be useful to discuss what is believed to be the family of Ann's
second husband John BREEDING. A Bible record lists what is believed to be
this John and his first wife.
John BREEDING b. 4 Oct. 1730; married 1 May 1749
Winfred Eliza ASHBY b. 3 Jan. 1731
children:
James BREEDING 16 Nov. 1750
John BREEDING 8 My 1752
Wifred Eliozab BREEDING 27 Aug. 1757
Spencer R. BREEDING 1 May 1759; m. Elizabeth FINNEY 5 Aug. 1786

It is believed that Thomas SHORT who married Nancy was more likely a brother
(rather than father) to John SHORT, and that they were both sons of Samuel SHORT
who died in 1764, and brothers to the Samuel proved as the son of the elder Samuel.
It is believed the family of this Samuel SHORT is:
   Samuel SHORT b. say 1705; m. Ann PRICE [b. say 1730]; d. 1764
Frederick Co., VA; Ann m.2 John BREEDING [1730-1802]
      Samuel and Ann had children:
         1. Samuel SHORT b. say 1749; d. ca. 1808 Rockingham Co., VA
         2. Thomas SHORT b. 1749-1751; m. Nancy; living 1814 Cabell Co., [West] VA
	       2a. Samuel Short b. say 1773; m. Elizabeth Breeding
	       2b. Thomas SHORT b. ca. 1775 VA; d. 15 Aug. 1853 Lawrence Co., KY
         3. John SHORT b. 1756 Frederick [now Shenandoah Co., VA]
Mary HANSFORD [his first cousin once removed]; d. 1836 Lawrence Co., Ind.
         4. Permilia "Milly" SHORT and Richard THOMPSON
         5. Talitha SHORT b. 28 Dec. 1760; m. 14 July 1782 Christopher HAINES
Rockingham Co., VA; d. 13 Aug. 1851-11 Jan. 1853 Allen Co. KY
	 6. Mary SHORT b. say 1762; m. Augustine BERRY; d. Allen Co., KY
	 7. Nancy SHORT b. say 1764; m. Lazarus DAMRON, son of Moses below
Note: John DAMRON, also son of Moses m. Anna LADD, sister to
               Judith below

While deeds show the wife of Thomas SHORT was named Nancy, no evidence has been found
that her surname was McNAIRY, McINERY, etc., as claimed by some. This appears to have
its origin in a privately published manuscript by Luther F. DAMRON, The Descendants
of Lazarus Damron in West Virginia. In his paper he stated that Lazarus DAMRON was
born about 1755, and "A deed executed by him and his wife shows her name as Nancy, but
it is believed that her name was Nancy McINERY." Later researchers knew that the wife
of Lazarus was actually Nancy SHORT, not McINERY. Why Luther DAMRON believed her name
was McINERY was not given.

Speculation by some researchers that it was actually Nancy SHORT's alleged mother Nancy
who was a McINERY has lead to that as statement of fact by some. As listed above, it is
believed that Thomas SHORT's wife Nancy was actually a sister-in-law to Nancy SHORT, not
her mother. There is no reason to be believe that Thomas SHORT's wife Nancy was a
McNAIRY or McINERY.

The conclusion that Thomas is a brother to John rather than his father is based on the
following [refer to the records at the bottom by date for full details on those records].

1. Samuel SHORT died in Frederick County, VA between 21 May 1763 and 11 Aug. 1764.
2. As discussed above, Samuel had a son Samuel who was his "heir at law" [oldest son].
3. The younger Samuel was of age by 29 July 1770 when with his mother Ann BREEDEN, he
sold the Frederick County land he had inherited from his father by being his heir
at law. He was listed as a resident of Augusta County, where his new step father,
John BREEDING/BREEDEN lived. Being at least 21 in 1770, Samuel would have been born
   no later than 1749.
4. It would be unusual if the elder Samuel did not have other children born between
the birth of his son Samuel by 1749, and his death in 1763/4.
5. On 11 Apr. 1767 delinquents at a private muster in Augusta County included John
BREEDEN and [his step-son] Samuel SHORT. The ages for militia at this time in VA
were ages 18 to 60, also placing Samuel born by 1749.
6. On 2 Sep. 1769 and 16 Sep. 1769 delinquents at a private muster in Augusta County
included [in order] John BREADEN, Samuel SHORT and Thomas SHORT. An implication of this
is that Thomas was younger than Samuel, and turned age 18 between 1767 and 1769, as
he was not listed on the 1767 list.
7. On 2 Mar. 1773 in a court case in Augusta County against John BREEDING, Bryan BREEDING,
and John BREEDING, signing as security for them that they would appear in court were
Samuel SHORT and Thomas SHORT. Samuel is the proved step-son of John BREEDING, and his
being security for his in law would be natural, as would Thomas a step-son of John
BREEDING. If Thomas was the father of John, the closest relation he could be Samuel
in this record would be his uncle or cousin. In either case, it would be less likely
that Thomas would be security for step-relative of his cousin or nephew Samuel.
8. On 16 Oct. 1776 signing a petition in Augusta County with their signatures close were
Samuel S[H]ORT, Thomas SHORT, John SHORT, John BREEDING, Jr. and John BREEDING, Sr.

Samuel SHORT the younger remained in that part of Augusta County that became
Rockingham County, while his brothers, mother, and step-family the BREEDINGS moved to
Russell County, VA. The children of Samuel SHORT the elder continued to interact with
the BREEDING family there. Note:
1. ca. 1794 when John BREEDING deed witnessed by [his son] Spencer BREEDING and [his
   step-son] John SHORT.
2. ca. 1794 JOhn BREEDING [Jr.] sold land to his [step-brother] John SHORT that was
witnessed by Zachariah PRICE (John's uncle or another Zachariah?).
3. 22 July 1794 Spencer BREEDING & wife Elizabeth to [his step-brother] John SHORT.
4. ca. 1797 John BREEDEN to [his son] Spencer BREEDEN adjacent to [John's step-son
   and Spencer's step-brother] John SHORT.
5. 25 June 1799 John TOLLET to Spencer BREEDING witnessed by [Spencer's step-brother-in-law]
   Christopher HAINS.
6. 26 Aug. 1799 Spencer BREEDING to [his step-brother-in-law] Augustin BERRY.
7. 8 May 1801 John BREEDING to John BREEDING, Jr. witnessed by Richard THOMPSON [the elder
   John's step-son-in-law].
8. 22 Mar. 1803 Spencer BREEDING to [his step-brother-in-law] Augustin BERRY.

From the Samuel SHORT who died in 1764 in Frederick Co., there are records connecting him
back to Spotsylvania Co., VA. Notice
6 May 1746 and 3 June 1746 with Samuel SHORT, Felix GUILBERT, and Mungo PRICE in Spotsylvania
County, and then in Frederick County on 4 Jan 1749/50 where Monge PRICE was witness to a
survey next to Samuel SHORT and on 7 June 1751 when Samuel SHORT and Mungo PRICE were chain
carriers together.

Notice that there was a court case on 7 Feb. 1732/3 against Samuel SHORT in Spotsylvania
County, while his father [see below] was listed only a few months later as being in
Caroline County.

The following records are believed to be this Samuel SHORT, his sons, and sons-in-law:

claims that Samuel SHORT and Sarah CATLETT had a son named Thomas. No
evidence of a son named Thomas has been found.

Samuel SHORT who died in 1764 Frederick Co. VA, in being followed back through the Spotsylvania County records, would be "Samuel SHORT, Jr." that was a witness on 11 Aug. 1727 to the will of his [half brother-in-law] William HANSFORD, husband of Sarah SALLIS. He would also the the Samuel SHORT that was named in the 16 Nov. 1725 will of Samuel SALLIS as his "half brother." Samuel SHORT, "Jr." was the son of another Samuel SHORT and his wife Sarah CATLETT. She was born say 1668. Sarah had three marriages, with Samuel SHORT being the third. Her three marriages and children by each were: Robert TALIFERRO d. 1688 Old Rappahannock [now Essex] Co., VA 1. Samuel SHORT, Sr., also had at least three marriages, with Sarah CATLETT, the widow TALIFERRO and SALLIS being his first. This marriage may had been at least partially for financial gain and he may have been several years younger than her. Samuel SHORT, Sr. was probably born about 1670-1680. His marriages and children were: 1. Sarah (CATLETT) TALIAFERRO SALLIS; she died by 1719 1a. Samuel SHORT Jr. b. ca. 1705; m. Ann PRICE; d. 1764 Frederick Co., VA 1a1. Samuel SHORT [S-17] b. 1774 Guilford Co., NC; m.bond Lydia FIELD 15 Feb. 1796; d. 26 Jan. 1842 Franklin Co., MO Note that in the 1850 Coffee Co., TN census that Alfred M. SHORT was age 22. By tradition, he was a son of Constantine SHORT and Jane BUSBY. If his age of 22 is correct, then he would have been a son of Aaron SHORT who married Constantine's widow Jane on 12 Dec. 1826. She divorced Aaron in 1829. If Alfred's age of 22 is incorrect and he was actually older, then he could be a son of Jane by Constantine. Note that in her 1829 divorce petition from Aaron SHORT, Jane (BUSBY) SHORT stated that he stayed with her about 3 months, left her with child, and she had not heard from him since. From that, she should have had a child born in late 1827. In examining the following records some things to note are: 1. Samuel Jr. was not born until about 1705, as Sarah (CATLETT) TALIAFERRO SALLIS's husband Samuel SALLIS did not die until 1704. The marriage in 1719 to Sarah, the widow ARMSTRONG would have to be Samuel, Sr., as Samuel, Jr. was only 14 years old at that time. 2. The marriage by 1724 would also be for Samuel, Sr., as the land being sold was land he purchased that was part of the patent to Robert Taliaferro. 3. On 9 Oct. 1724 Samuel SHORT and wife Frances sold a tract in Essex County to Edward Evans. This was followed by a case against James NOELL & wife Elizabeth, the executors of Edward EVANS by George MASON, the assignee of Samuel SHORT, on 19 Oct. 1726, 21 June 1727, and 19 July 1727, that was dismissed on 16 Aug. 1727. 4. On 16 May 1733 Samuel SHORT again brought suit against James NOELL & wife Elizabeth, the executors of Edward EVANS in Essex County. Samuel was living in Caroline County at the time, working as an overseer for Robert TALIAFERRO, showing this move. 5. Samuel was still in Caroline County in 1736, but by 1742 had moved to Goochland, which became Albemarle County. 6. Moses Short was paid a bounty on 26 Jan. 1745/6, placing him in the vicinity of the LADD family and where Samuel SHORT had his land surveyed. 7. The 1751 account of Robert WALTON places Moses SHORT in the same vicinity as Samuel SHORT, and he probably lived on the land Samuel SHORT had surveyed. 8. The probable age of Moses from when his children were born, would place Moses as a son of Samuel. 9. Albemarle County court order books which would contain mention of an estate do not survive from 1748-1783. It is believed Samuel SHORT, Sr., likely died in Albemarle County after 1747 when he had a lawsuit settled, and by 1751 when his son Moses appeared in Rowan Co., NC. The following records are believed to apply to Samuel SHORT, Sr. and his children: ESSEX COUNTY 6 June 1688 Sarah TALIAFERRO admx. of the estate of her husband Robert TALIAFERRO 6 Dec. 1688 Samuel SALLIS and wife Sarah, admx. of the estate of her deceased husband Robert TALIAFERRO 10 June 1704 Administration f the Estate of Samll. Robert WALTON. Note: This tract was patented on 16 August 1756 by Abraham Childres [CHILDERS/CHILDRESS]. It is unknown when between 1746 and 1756 SHORT transferred his rights in the survey to CHILDRES. On 20 November 1750 George Wilson had 300 acres surveyed next to the tract [as Samuel Short]. Robert Walton sold his rights to what was probably a land entry, for on 18 December 1751 Thomas Couthorn had 350 acres surveyed on the west branches of Bremore Creek adjacent to Samuel Short, Joseph Goode, Joseph Walton, and John Payne. The common boundary with Samuel Short showed that Couthorn owned the land that was previously Robert Walton's when Samuel Short had his survey. John PAYNE had a patent on 20 June 1749 that was adjacent to both WILSON's tract above, and to Noble LADD. The Samuel SHORT survey continued to be listed as adjacent to land owners as late as 1775, even though the tract was granted to CHILDRES in 1756. The deeds were reciting the bounds of previous deeds, without updating for modern owners. CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA [undated] 1751 account of Robert WALTON [will written 1746 Goochland Co. probated 1750 Cumberland] contained a payment to Moses SHORT for 11 hogshead of tobacco. Note: This is the Robert WALTON who owned land adjacent to the 1746 survey of Samuel SHORT in Albemarle Co. Other payments included other neighbors of SHORT and WALTON on Bremo Creek.
