The early generations of the Kernen families have been incorrectly
listed on many trees online. The Kernen family holds citizenship at
Reutigen, Canton Bern, Switzerland. In that parish, it is a very
common surname. To differentiate in the church records between men
of the same name, they were often identified by either their occupation
or title in the local government. Those trees are usually correct to
the generation of where Hans Kernen married Eva Kernen in 1730. The
misidentification is in the identify of that Hans. Most online trees
identify him as the Hans Kernen baptized on 15 November 1711, the son
of an Abraham Kernen and wife Anna Kernen.

There are several records which identify Hans Kernen who married Eva Kernen
by his occupation.
1. For the 4 June 1741 burial of his son Hans, he was called the younger Saümer.
2. For the 9 Apr. 1747 baptism of his daughter Elisabeth, he was listed as a Saümer.
3. For Elisabeth’s burial on 16 Oct. 1750, age 3 ½. he was listed as a Küeffer.
4. For his own burial on 18 Jan. 1765, he was a Küfer and age 70, placing his birth
as about 1695, so he could not be the Hans baptized in 1711.
5. His daughter Susanna (baptized 17 Nov. 1737) died 17 Apr. 1769, age 31, and was
listed as the daughter of the deceased Hans the Küfer.

A Saümer is variously translated as a muleteer, or a freight hauler using beasts of
burden. A Küfer is a cooper.

Hans birth of about 1695 identifies him as the Hans Kernen baptized on 2 July 1697
at Wimmis (where his mother was from), the son of Abraham Kernen of Reutigen and
Barbara Anken. Abraham was also a Saümer, which would be why in 1741 Hans was called
the younger Saümer.

1. Abraham and Barbara had a daughter Margreth baptized in 1702 at Wimmis, where
Barbara was born. The 1702 baptism was later recorded at Reutigen among the
1715 records and that version listed Abraham as the Saümer at Reutigen.
2. For the 1714 baptism of Peter, son of Abraham Kernen and Barbara Anken, he was
listed as the Saümer from Reutigen.
3. For the 1717 baptisms of Elsbeth, daughter of Abraham Kernen and Barbara Anken,
he was listed as the Saümer from Reutigen.
4. Abrahams’s burial on 8 Nov. 1742 listed him as the Saümer, age 70.
5. The burial of Hans Kernen on 24 April 1741 listed him as the Saümer’s brother,
   age 74.
