John DANCY was born an estimated about 1730, possibly in Ireland, and lived in
Rowan Co., NC. For additional info and sources on him, see his WikiTree page
John lived in that part of Rowan Co. that became Davidson Co. in 1822.

The name of his first wife and mother of his children is not known. One person
in 1928 claimed that John was her great-great-grandfather and that in 1760 he came
from Ireland to Rowan Co., NC, with his wife Anne Morgan of Ireland.1 No
original records have been found of even her given name.

John DANCY's wife at death was named Margaret. On 10 February 1810 "Letters of
Administration was granted on the Estate of John Dancy to Josiah Owens who gave
bond with Henry Rattz and John Smith in £500."2 On 6 August 1810 was the court
case of
Joseph Clark in Support of the Will of John Dancy
vs.
Edward & William Dancy
on the case of Pleas devisavit vel non [Latin for whether a will is valid]
A jury of 12 men "find that the Testator did Devise"3

On 16 Nov. 1811 there was an order for a jury of 12 men to divide the land of
John Dancy, deceased, agreeably to the will.4 While he is stated to
have had a will, there is no recorded copy in Rowan County, and an original
loose will does not survive.

John Dancy's estate file contains additional information.5 The division mentioned
in the court records shows that on 14, 15, 16, and 17 January 1812 a surveyor was
on the premises, and divided the land into 6 tracts.
No. 1, "the Widows lot" contained 127 acres valued at £254.
No. 2, of 127 acres valued at £254.
No. 3, of 127 acres valued at £127.
No. 6 of 37 acres to be annexed to No. 6
No. 4 of 127 acres valued at £63.10.
No. 5 of 127 acres valued at £63.10.
No. 6 of 90 acres valued at £91.5.
Unfortunately the widow was not named, and who received each of the other lots was not stated.
There were no papers identifying any of the heirs.

While John Dancy's widow was not identified in the division, she was identified a few months
later when she sold her tract. On 12 March 1812 Margaret Dancy of Rowan Co. sold to David Harman
of the same, for $508, a tract on the waters of Swerring Creek of 127 acres, "being a tract of
Land Devised to the said Margaret Dancy by her husband John Dancy, Decd." Other than a couple
minor differences, the metes and bounds of the tract was the same as Lot No. 1 in the division.6
